The Hammersmith & Fulham Borough Council is committed to the bicycle as a form of transport and is currently developing a Borough Cycling Strategy. In many ways Hammersmith and Fulham is well suited to cycling as it is flat, compact and has a dense development pattern. Some 7% of borough residents currently cycle to work (Borough Household Transport and Recycling Survey – March 2000, MORI ), which is over three times the London average. There is great pressure for development in the borough which will test the capacity of bus and underground networks. A small increase in cycling could help to relieve some of this pressure.
The National Cycling Strategy was launched in July 1996. It aims to establish a culture favourable to the increased use of bicycles for all age groups; to develop sound policies and good practice; and seek out effective and innovative means of fostering accessibility by bike. The central target is to quadruple the number of cycle trips on 1996 figures by 2012. As well as setting a central target for cycle trips, the National Cycling Strategy encourages local authorities and others to establish local targets for increased cycle use.
Homeport developed and produced the ‘Homeport’ secure electronic locks for use in the OYBike system. The small size and low cost of the Homeport has contributed to the efficiency of the system in maximising coverage of the target rental area whilst providing a high density of bicycle stations.
