First Town Centre Bike Rental System Arrives in the UK
Cheltenham joins Paris, Barcelona & Other European Cities to Offer Bikes for Hire
Cheltenham, long a town known for its spa, regency housing and festivals now has another accolade to add to the list. It has become the first UK town centre to offer a self-service bike hire system to local commuters and visitors to the area.
Following hard on the heels of the recent government announcement naming UK Cycling Demonstration Towns, Cheltenham, although not on the list for government funding, is paving the way, implementing a pilot 30-strong bike system across 9 locations this month.
OYBike, together with partner Veolia Transport, one of the world’s largest transport companies, is utilising its experience of systems in universities and business parks to provide the service in Cheltenham. Offering customers the first 30 minutes for free, customers can use their mobile phone to release an OYBike from its rental station.
OYBike recognise the importance of integrating bike systems with other transport modes to maximise convenience and meet customer needs. We are delighted to work with First Great Western, who have provided an OYBike link at Cheltenham station to offer customers the opportunity to begin their journey at the railway station and cycle into the city.
Remarking on the launch, OYBike Managing Director Bernie Hanning said “We are delighted to be part of Cheltenham’s pilot plans to provide sustainable transport alternatives for locals and visitors alike. By linking our bike rental scheme to the railway station, we are also offering an integrated transport system that firmly puts Cheltenham on the map for innovative transport ideas.”
